Brody the blind Lab

Brody MainBrody was found wandering in a snowstorm in Pennsylvania this past winter. Someone took this handsome blind Lab to a local shelter. Inexplicably, no one claimed this gentle boy. A rescue group in State College called Pets Come First pulled him from the shelter before he ran the risk of being euthanized.

The rescue group tried to find someone locally to adopt Brody but didn't find much interest. They sent out a request for help, and eventually a person in Ohio who saw their plea put them in touch with us.

The rescue group had originally named the dog Old Yeller because they thought he was elderly. After we agreed to take him, they posted his photo on their Web site with the headline, "Old Yeller gets accepted at the 'Harvard' for blind dogs!"

While we worked out travel arrangements, the dog went to a foster home arranged by Cindy McClellen of Rescue Our Furry Friends in Lewistown, Pennsylvania. We paid to fly him out from Philadelphia, and we picked him up at the Missoula airport late one night in mid-March.

We realized very quickly that despite a light-colored muzzle, he wasn't an old boy at all. In fact, he was full of energy and liked to woof it up. We renamed him Brody.

He is such an incredibly sweet dog. .. he loves to shake hands, and he will roll over for a belly rub as soon as you approach him. It's impossible to imagine this gentle, adorable fellow roaming as a stray in a snowstorm -- he is totally blind and can't see a thing -- and even harder to understand why no one would try to find him and bring him home.

But we're thrilled to have Brody here, where we have lots of other blind Labs -- just none of the "Yeller" kind! His best friend is, in fact, another Lab, our three-legged boy Cody.
