Cassie the three-legged dog
Cassie
was listed in the local Sunday newspaper's "To Give Away"
section. You know, the "free to a good home" ad.
We rarely look at that part of the newspaper because it makes
us sick to see so many animals considered to have no value,
with owners just eager to get rid of them. We suspect many
end up in medical research facilities.
But reading the paper that evening, we happened to notice the listing for a "three-legged dog." That certainly caught our attention. We figured the dog had been through enough already, and we wondered what fate awaited her next. For the first time ever, we called about a "give-away" animal. It turns out that Cassie's owner had moved in with relatives who would not let her keep the dog she loved. Either she lost the dog, or she lost her housing.

We learned that Cassie's leg had been amputated after she was hit by a car the year before. Cassie also had recently given birth to a litter of puppies, which had been taken in by a private rescuer. The pregnancy and then feeding the nursing puppies had been hard on Cassie, whose three legs struggled to keep up with all the extra weight. The poor dog should have been spayed long before.
So Cassie joined the rest of the disabled gang at the ranch, and settled right in. She is a sweet, gentle dog who gets along with everybody. And her soft, maternal manner makes her the favorite "aunt" for all the other dogs.
