Luke the blind dog
The Humane Society of Western Montana asked if we could take a blind Lab named Vader who had been turned in to the shelter. His eyes were a mess. That we could deal with, but his name? Star Wars or not, no dog here was going to be named Vader.
We posted his arrival on our blog and asked readers to suggest a new name. The winning entry came from Karen F. in Missoula: "Change the name Vader to Luke. Same movie but good over evil." We thought that was perfect.
Luke's eyes turned out to be chronically infected and painful. After an ophthalmology exam, our vets recommended we remove his eyes, since it was the only way to make him comfortable.

Now pain-free, Luke happily bounds across the dog paddock at Widget's House to greet visitors. He is an exuberant fellow who just loves company. .. dogs, humans, it doesn't matter. He's one happy boy.
As far as Luke's concerned, good did prevail.
