Meet the Animals - Horses

Domino the blind horse

Beauty MainWell, we'll admit that Domino isn't exactly a "recent" arrival — he's actually been here for a couple of years! We had originally agreed to take him because he was supposedly blind, but when Domino arrived we could tell he was able to see. That's happened before to us, and two "blind" horses are now part of our mini-herd of sighted horses.

Domino had impaired vision from episodes of uveitis, but he could see well enough that he fit in just fine with the sighted horses — for a while. But, as it usually does, uveitis slowly robbed Domino of his remaining vision, and now he is completely blind.

He adjusted well, as blind horses typically do, and now he's "officially" here!

Once used for endurance riding, this little Appaloosa is a calm, easy-going fellow. In fact, when we were training our born-blind filly for riding, we saddled up Domino and had him lead Nikki on her first pasture rides so she'd have someone to follow and show the ropes, so to speak. It was truly a case of the blind leading the blind!

Domino picked up his very own girlfriend along the way, our blind Appaloosa mare Guadalupe. She's just as small and sweet as he is, so they make a perfect pair. They graze side-by-side, and if we ever take one away without the other, they get very upset — whinnying for each other and dashing about in circles. So these two go everywhere together!
