Marie the blind mare
Marie
came from out along the Rocky Mountain Front in Montana, where
the plains meet the mountains. She had been a roping horse
on a ranch. At the age of 15, she went blind. We don't know
why.
Blind horses instantly fall to the bottom of the pecking order in the herd. They get beaten up, pushed away from food, and harassed. It is not a pleasant life. To protect her, Marie's owner brought her into a corral at the ranch and left her there. The corral didn't have a water tank, so Marie got to drink only when someone went out to lead her to water. She stayed in this corral, by herself, for two years.

Eventually - it must have seemed an eternity for Marie -
our farrier heard about this lonely, blind horse. He arranged
for her to come to the sanctuary. Now she has other blind
horses for company, and all the water she can drink, whenever
she wants.
