Pappy's Fund for Emergency Medical Care
Pappy's Fund is our emergency medical fund for the disabled animals at the ranch. Since medical emergencies are a fact of life when you care for as many animals as we do, we realized there's always a need for a special fund to pay for life-saving but often expensive emergency medical treatment. Thus we welcome contributions designated for this special purpose. Thank you!
The History of Pappy's Fund
In July 2005, we were blessed with a $4,000 challenge grant offer from a wonderful supporter of the sanctuary. The person who has offered the challenge grant wishes to remain anonymous. However, the gift is from the estate of her late son, who believed that humans were responsible for the stewardship of all animals. His untimely loss created a legacy that will directly benefit the sanctuary's animals.
At the same time we learned of this fabulous donation, our treasured old German Shepherd, Pappy, had just come home from the vet hospital. He had been struck first by pneumonia and then, suddenly, by meningitis. Our vets gave him a 20% chance of surviving. After 10 long days in the hospital, we finally brought our beloved boy back home to the ranch. He had beaten the odds, and every day we have with him now is a special gift.
So when our supporter asked us how we would like to use the challenge grant, we immediately thought of an emergency medical fund and named it in Pappy's honor.
Whenever we agree to take an animal, we plan on providing whatever medical care it may need for the rest of its life. And every year we have several unanticipated medical crises that generate hefty vet bills. In Pappy's case, the bill was nearly $2,000.
This is why we were especially grateful for the challenge grant to establish Pappy's Fund. It will help us cover the kind of medical emergency we had with Pappy.
Soon after we announced the challenge grant, other sanctuary supporters sent in their own generous donations to match the grant. A few months later we launched Pappy's Fund with more than $13,000!
Please note that the initial challenge grant was to launch the fund; new donations for Pappy's Fund are not matched.
Pappy's Fund Today
Of course, veterinary care is our biggest single expense for the animals by far. In 2006 we spent more than $38,000 on medical care. Pappy's Fund helped us cover a good portion of those expenses for emergency cases. That's why we continue to welcome ongoing donations specifically for Pappy's Fund. There's always a need!
